BASS Week 1 Meeting!

We’re excited to announce BASS’s first meeting of the year, and we hope you’ll come, whether you’re an established BASStard, an old member who’s been busy, or if you’re just interested in starting something new.

This week, like every week, we’ll begin with a fun introduction question, announcements, fact or fiction, and science news, and then move on to the main topic of the meeting. This week we’ll have a discussion on how to handle believers. Whether it’s a chiropractor, a professor, or your mom, we’ve all encountered people who believe things that we know aren’t true. When do you speak up, and when do you stay silent? What’s the best way to talk some sense into them without putting them on the defensive? Bring your thoughts!

If anyone would like to volunteer to be the newsperson for this meeting or beyond (bring 3-4 short science/skeptical news stories to tell us about), let us know; we’d be thankful.

Welcome BASS Meeting V!
When: Friday, February 5th, 5:00-6:30 pm
Where: Kerckhoff 135

This week, UCLA Professor Friscia will be presenting a talk on Charles
Darwin the naturalist.

“Charles Darwin was many things, but the title that served him best in perfecting his idea of evolution by natural selection is Naturalist. He was a keen observer of nature, a skill he developed even before his famous trip around the world on the Beagle, and which he continued to use well into old age. While there are still great naturalists today, venturing out and observing nature and drawing conclusions based on those basic observations is unfortunately not the kind of academic work that gets funded. Nevertheless there should be a place for this kind of fundamental natural history knowledge, both in academic research as well as among the lay population. It doesn’t take large sums of money or equipment to do it, and the information it can gather are invaluable to the complex ecological and evolutionary studies that move these fields forward.”

If you come to one BASS meeting this quarter, this week is a good choice.

-Separation of Church & State: Its Philosophical, Constitutional, and Political Bases

Suggested Snack ideas (thanks to Joe):

Sprite and Coke (or any other brand) in 2 liter bottles
Water in 1 liter
Chips: Tortilla or any other
Dip: Medium hot salsa or any other. Chips must come with dip
Sweets/candy
Misc.: Whatever you want, but make sure you at least have a vegetarian substitute

Materials: Plates, napkins, cups, plastic silverware (but usually, I will bring extras myself)

Please keep any receipts so that we can compensate you for the cost. If you bring something homemade, I’m sure we can work something out as well. Compensation is not absolutely guaranteed (sorry!).

If you are unable to bring snacks on your assigned day, it’s not a big deal, but you must tell me ahead of time, so that I can find someone else to bring snacks.

First, a bit of news. Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron made personal appearances today, a day early! It was very sneaky of them. However, they will still distribute books tomorrow (Thursday), so our original plans will continue. Please stop by our table on Bruin Walk tomorrow.

We will have a talk by Mikael Miller, a gay ex-Mormon and fellow Bruin. He is an excellent speaker and storyteller, as any of last year’s BASS members will attest. If you attend only one meeting this quarter, this one’s a good choice!

We will also include a brief presentation by Ben on how evangelicals view Jehovah’s Witnesses.
