In the wake of last week’s Virginia Tech shootings, many people have naturally asked, “Whose fault is this?” The underlying assumption behind this question is that the incident could have been prevented, if only … there were more restrictive gun laws / the university had shut down the campus after the first shootings / his court-appointed psychiatrist hadn’t released him so soon / etc. This is indeed an important question to ask; if genuine mistakes were made, we can learn from them and help prevent future tragedies.
